More layoffs at U.S. firms
The job market has still not come all the way back in the West as some firms in the U.S. continue to shed attorneys and staff. Less than a month after the failure of the proposed merger between IP firm Townsend and Kilpatrick Stockton, Townsend acknowledged that it is letting go of 9 attorneys and 25 support staff.
The Daily Journal reports that all of the layoffs will be at its Bay Area offices, and although it’s not a huge number, it seems that even partners may not be safe in the next few months.
And this isn’t the first time Townsend has lost some lawyers. The ABA Journal, noted that back in April 2009 the firm fired 16 lawyers and 45 staff members.
And not to be outdone, IP firm Brinks Hofer recently said goodbye to 18 people, including seven attorneys, one patent agent, and ten staff.
All in all, not a good summer for a lot of lawyers in the U.S., but things are still shaping up fairly nicely in Asia on the legal job front. Maybe it’s time to consider an Eastern working vacation?
